Axis Insurance Managers Inc. (formerly Winram Insurance Ltd.) was established as a single location family business over 70 years ago, and incorporated in 1950. The business was purchased in 1999 by Tony Davis and two silent equity partners. It was from there that the company saw a new era of growth. Clive Bird joined the firm in 2004 acquiring the shares of the other equity partners and added a new dimension of expertise. From there the company grew exponentially. In 2005 the company was rebranded “Axis Insurance Managers” and has since gone from strength to strength. Axis would currently rank in the top 10 of all commercial insurance specialty brokers in Western Canada.

The firm currently operates from 5 main locations in British Columbia, 1 location in the Yukon Territory, and has a joint partnership arrangement in Hinton Alberta. 75% of the company’s business is commercial lines and 25% is derived from personal lines. Automobile insurance in British Columbia is transacted by a Provincial Government company ICBC which makes up approximately 30% of the personal lines business.

Axis' team consists of a group of dedicated professionals who have almost exclusively come from the ranks of the large International Brokerage Community. They focus on a number of specialty lines including: Mining and Energy accounts, Forestry, Marine Cargo/Warehousing and Distribution, E&O/D&O, Financial Institutions, Real Estate, Food Processing and Hospitality. Axis has a diverse book of other general business, and there are few if any classes that they have no experience in writing. At this point Axis does not have a Life and Benefits division, but they are not ruling out for the possibility of such a venture in the future.

Lee Weitman is the Axis International Desk Manager. Lee is no novice to the duties of IDM. He performed a similar role in Vancouver for Willis Canada from 2003 to 2010 and at Aon Vancouver from 1996 to 2003. Lee started his insurance career in 1993 with Dale & Company.

Clive Bird was formerly at Dale & Company and Willis and began his career in Lloyds in 1975. Clive is well known and respected in Vancouver for his knowledge, particularly with respect to E&O/D&O and the mining industry.

Tony Davis began his insurance career in the UK with General Accident Fire and Life Corp PLC in 1981. He moved to Canada in 1987 and worked at Dale & Company and later at Jardine Rolfe Ltd. before acquiring Winram Insurance Ltd. in 1999, which became Axis Insurance Managers in 2005.
